Dryer vent cleaning that clears the whole run, not just the lint trap

Lint removed from the dryer connection to the exterior hood, with the vent material and route checked for safety.

The lint screen catches only part of what a dryer produces. The rest travels into the vent, where it builds up over time, slows drying and creates a fire hazard. Cleaning the full run and correcting unsafe venting protects the home.

Why dryer vents need professional attention

A clothes dryer pushes hot, moist, lint-laden air through a vent to the outdoors. Lint that gets past the screen collects along the inside of the vent, especially at bends, low spots and the exterior hood. As buildup grows, airflow drops, drying times lengthen and the dryer runs hotter.

Fire safety agencies consistently identify failure to clean dryers and their vents as a leading factor in home dryer fires. Beyond fire risk, a restricted vent wastes energy, wears out dryer components and, with gas dryers, can interfere with the safe discharge of combustion byproducts.

Moisture is part of the problem too. A dryer can release a large amount of water vapor with every load, and when the vent is restricted or disconnected, that moisture can end up in wall cavities, attics or the laundry room itself.

What a thorough cleaning includes

Our technicians disconnect the dryer, inspect the transition duct behind it and clean the vent from the dryer connection to the exterior termination. Rotary brushes and vacuum equipment designed for vent work remove lint from the full length, including bends that are hard to reach by hand.

The exterior hood is cleaned and its damper checked. A damper stuck open lets in cold air and pests, while one stuck closed traps lint and moisture. The lint screen housing inside the dryer is also cleared, since lint can accumulate below the screen where homeowners cannot easily reach.

After cleaning, airflow at the exterior hood is checked with the dryer running. A strong, steady flow confirms the vent is clear.

Vent materials and routing

Vent material matters. Rigid or semi-rigid metal duct is widely recommended because it has a smooth interior and resists crushing. Plastic and thin foil accordion ducts are more easily crushed, trap lint in their ridges and are not considered appropriate by many manufacturers and codes.

The route should be as short and straight as practical. Every elbow adds resistance, and building codes limit the total length of a dryer vent, reducing the allowance for each bend. Long runs may need a listed booster fan, or rerouting may be the better option.

Joints should be connected so lint cannot catch on them. Screws that protrude into the duct create snag points, and codes commonly prohibit fasteners that extend into the airstream. We note these issues and explain how they can be corrected.

Exterior terminations and roof vents

Exterior hoods should have a backdraft damper and no screen. Screens quickly clog with lint and can block the vent entirely. Some homes have hoods fitted with screens intended for bathroom or kitchen exhausts, which are not suited to dryer use.

Roof-terminated dryer vents present additional challenges. Lint tends to collect at the top of the run, and the termination cap must be designed for dryer exhaust. Access requires appropriate safety measures, and we discuss whether cleaning from inside is possible before any roof work.

Terminations located near windows, doors or air intakes can allow moist, lint-filled air to re-enter the home. Relocation may be recommended in those cases.

Signs of trouble inside the laundry room

Laundry rooms reveal vent problems in several ways. Unusually high humidity, condensation on walls or windows and a musty smell can all indicate that moisture is not leaving the home. A hot laundry room while the dryer runs suggests the exhaust is not moving efficiently.

The dryer itself often gives clues. Clothes that take more than one cycle to dry, a cabinet that feels very hot or a burning smell are warning signs. Many newer dryers display a warning when they detect restricted airflow.

Lint visible around the dryer, behind it or at the exterior hood also indicates that the vent needs attention.

Gas dryers and combustion safety

Gas dryers burn fuel to produce heat, which creates combustion byproducts including carbon monoxide. A properly working vent carries those gases outdoors. A blocked or disconnected vent can allow them to enter the home.

For gas dryers, our technicians check that the vent is continuous, properly connected and not crushed behind the appliance. They also note whether a carbon monoxide alarm is present in the home.

If a gas odor is noticed during the visit, work stops and the gas supply issue is addressed according to safety procedures before anything else continues.

How often to schedule cleaning

Cleaning frequency depends on how much laundry the household does, the length and configuration of the vent and the type of fabrics dried. Large families, homes with pets and long vent runs typically need more frequent cleaning.

Many households benefit from an annual cleaning. Homes that do a lot of laundry may need it more often. The technician can recommend an interval based on the amount of lint removed and the condition of the vent.

Between cleanings, clean the lint screen before every load, avoid drying items contaminated with flammable substances and do not run the dryer when nobody is home. Moisture from a poorly vented dryer can also affect indoor air, which our Indoor Air Quality Testing service can measure.

Repairs and improvements we may recommend

Cleaning restores airflow, but some vents need more than cleaning to stay safe. Common recommendations include replacing a crushed or plastic transition duct behind the dryer, shortening an overly long run, removing unnecessary elbows, replacing a hood that has a screen or a broken damper, and sealing joints with foil tape rather than screws.

Vents that pass through unheated spaces can collect condensation in cold weather, which makes lint stick and build up faster. Insulating those sections or rerouting them through conditioned space can reduce the problem. Vents that sag between supports can trap water and lint at the low point, so proper support is part of any repair.

Every recommendation comes with a written price, and you choose what to address. Many improvements are completed during the same visit, which saves a return trip. If a laundry room is being remodeled, it is also a good opportunity to plan a shorter, straighter vent route that will be easier to maintain for years to come.

Warning signs of a clogged dryer vent

Take action when you notice these symptoms.

Long drying times

Clothes that need extra cycles usually indicate restricted airflow through the vent.

Hot dryer cabinet

A dryer that feels unusually hot to the touch may be overheating from poor exhaust.

Burning smell

Stop using the dryer and have the vent inspected if you notice a burning odor.

Lint around the hood

Lint collecting at the exterior termination suggests buildup inside the vent.

Humid laundry room

Excess moisture or condensation during drying indicates exhaust is not leaving properly.

Damper does not open

A hood flap that barely moves when the dryer runs signals low airflow.

Dryer vent cleaning questions

How long does cleaning take?

Most dryer vent cleanings take about an hour, though long or complex runs, roof terminations and repairs can take longer.

Is cleaning the lint screen enough?

No. The screen catches much of the lint, but some passes into the vent and accumulates over time. Periodic vent cleaning is still necessary.

Can you replace a plastic or foil vent?

Yes. We can replace unsuitable materials with metal duct appropriate for dryer venting and explain the benefits.

Do you clean vents that exit through the roof?

Often, depending on access and safety. We evaluate the situation and explain the options before starting.

Will cleaning lower my energy use?

A clear vent lets the dryer work efficiently, which can shorten drying times and reduce energy use.

Is dryer vent cleaning part of HVAC service?

Many heating and cooling companies provide it because it involves ventilation, airflow and combustion safety expertise.

Can a clogged vent affect my home's humidity?

Yes. If moist exhaust is not leaving the house, laundry areas and nearby rooms can become damp, which may contribute to condensation and odors.
